Electronic Pylon Sign, Utica, Michigan
Jimmy John’s Field asked us to update their electronic pylon sign in Utica, Michigan.
The existing structure was a single pole sign with a message center. Our challenge was to add a large lighted header sign above it and a large lighted ad panel cabinet below. Since the single pole and foundation were not engineered for this type of additional wind load our engineering team established that it would take additional concrete and poles to accomplish the task. Adding to the difficulty there is underground utilities and a large sewer that limited where the new footings could be located.
To create a strong base, we had to excavate right next to the existing foundation and between the sewer. To limit the risk of the sign tipping over after removing a substantial amount of the surrounding soil we attached a crane to hold and secure it during the work and overnight while concrete cured.
